NASA and the U.S. military use LASIK

So what is LASIK technology? LASIK is an alternative to wearing corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses. LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) is a type of refractive laser eye surgery performed by ophthalmologists for correcting myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

I found some LASIK information that might interest you. NASA and the U.S. military personnel uses this procedure to correct their vision. Steven Schallhorn, M.D., a a retired U.S. Navy captain, said “The Department of Defense (DOD) and NASA have validated the fact that today’s LASIK exceeds all established standards of safety and effectiveness.”

Now the modern Lasik which is called iLasik procedure uses two laser instead of one. In the first stage of iLASIK, wave-front technology maps the unique characteristics of the individual’s eyes. Then, an ultra fast, computer-guided laser creates a corneal flap. This laser replaces the handheld microkeratome blade used in older forms of LASIK and makes the procedure exceptionally safe. After the flap is created, the wave-front mapping data guides a second laser for vision correction. The iLASIK procedure is the result of a decade's worth of technical refinement; it combines all of the most advanced all-laser LASIK technology in one efficient LASIK platform, which makes this procedure painless and safe.

Noy only iLASIK procedure is very fast and very safe, it is also offers financing and the payments can be as low as $89 a month.

But for you to qualify for this great procedure you should be:
  1. atleast 21 years old,
  2. in good general health,
  3. have had a stable vision prescription for at least one year,
  4. and no existing eye disease

  1. iLASIK is but one of the many LASIK procedures offered today. It utilizies the VISX excimer laser to put down the refractive treatment and the Intralase laser to make the flap. Both lasers are made by AMO, who markets the iLASIK brand name. Results with iLASIk are excellent.

It can be argued that in an experienced surgeon's hands a microkeratome can make a flap as good, if not better than the laser. It can be further argued that the Wavelight Allegretto laser provides a better refractive outcome.

The take home message here is that there is more than one way to do LASIK.. its important to do your due diligence when deciding where you go to get LASIK. The most important factor is surgeon experience and track record!!
